My Sofa

I know this one seems a little trite but stick with me on this one.
For Tom J. :
My Sofa
I think that people in relationships are a lot like furniture.
When a piece of furniture is created, the makers take care to carefully mold it, shape it keep it from harm.
They care for and protect it as long as they can, but eventually the furniture gets bought
It’s usually the first owner that does the most damage
Stripped of its past protection, the surface is exposed to show the pristine beauty of the purchase
But perfection is vulnerable and with each misstep a chip is made and careless words form cracks along the edges
After a while, it begins to look worn and a little worse for wear
The owner begins to covet other things and eventually chooses what he or she thinks is an upgrade
There’s not room for old and new in the same house so the old furniture is thrown out to the curb for whatever stranger it happens to attract
The cycle begins again
But this time, old cracks grow deeper
Old chips will splinter till once again its out on the curb
Not until time is taken to repair the damage will things stop getting worse
Afterwards, the furniture becomes a thing of quality with history that makes it stronger than before
One might ask why the furniture just doesn’t leave and look for a new stranger with an eye for refinishing.
But when was the last time you saw a sofa just get up and walk away?
